How to Care for Anime Figures: Cleaning, Storage & Display Tips

How to clean, maintain and store anime figures properly — dusting tools, deep cleaning methods, UV protection, storage tips and crystal ball lightbox care.

Anime figures are investments — some appreciate in value, all represent meaningful purchases — and they deserve proper care. Whether you have a single beloved figure or a shelf full of collectibles, these practices will keep them looking exhibition-quality for years.

Dusting — The Most Important Habit

Dust is the primary enemy of figure displays. Fine particles accumulate in recesses, around accessories, and under clothing elements where they're difficult to remove once embedded. The solution is routine light dusting rather than infrequent deep cleaning.

Best tools for regular dusting:

  • Soft artist's paintbrush (size 8–12) — the most useful tool in any collector's kit. Reaches into crevices, gentle enough for painted surfaces, and doesn't generate static like synthetic brushes can.
  • Microfibre cloth — for flat surfaces and bases. Never use paper towels; they're abrasive at a microscopic level.
  • Compressed air — useful for figures with complex layered elements (wings, flowing fabric), but hold the can at least 20cm away and use in short bursts.

Aim to dust weekly if your display is open, monthly if enclosed in a display case.

Deep Cleaning

For figures that have accumulated grime (particularly secondhand acquisitions or figures that have been in storage), a more thorough clean is needed.

  1. Remove detachable accessories and clean separately
  2. Dampen a soft cloth or cotton bud with lukewarm water only — avoid soap unless absolutely necessary
  3. For stubborn marks: a tiny amount of mild dish soap diluted heavily in water, applied with a cotton bud, then immediately rinsed with clean water
  4. Dry completely before returning to display — moisture left in recesses can cause paint lifting
  5. Never use alcohol, acetone, or solvent-based cleaners — these strip paint and damage the base material

Protecting Paint and Finish

Most PVC figures use acrylic paint that's relatively durable but not immune to damage. Key precautions:

  • UV exposure — direct sunlight is the primary cause of colour fading and plastic yellowing. Keep displays away from windows, or use UV-filtering display cases.
  • Heat — PVC softens at elevated temperatures. Avoid display near heat sources, in cars, or in rooms that get very warm in summer. A warped figure base almost always comes from heat exposure.
  • Contact — figures touching each other or walls can transfer paint over time. Leave space between pieces.

Storage

If you need to store figures rather than display them:

  • Keep them in their original boxes when possible — the internal packaging is custom-fitted for protection
  • If boxes aren't available, wrap in acid-free tissue paper (not bubble wrap, which can leave marks on painted surfaces over time)
  • Store upright, never on their sides — sustained lateral pressure can warp stands and bases
  • Store in a cool, dry environment away from light

Display Cases

A display case is the single best investment for serious collectors. Benefits: dust protection reduces cleaning to quarterly rather than weekly, UV-filtering glass or acrylic prevents fading, and the enclosed environment maintains humidity stability.

IKEA Detolf and Billy bookcase with glass doors are the most common among serious collectors for value-to-quality ratio. Dedicated collector cases (Ikea-style but taller, with built-in LED lighting) are available from specialist suppliers.

Crystal Ball Lightboxes — Specific Care

For our LED crystal ball lightboxes:

  • Clean the sphere with a soft microfibre cloth only — avoid anything abrasive that could scratch the surface
  • For fingerprints (very common on spheres), a lens cleaning cloth works perfectly
  • The LED base is not waterproof — never clean with wet materials near the base or power connector
  • If the light flickers, check the USB connection before assuming LED failure — 90% of cases are connector issues

Well-maintained figures hold their value and remain display-ready indefinitely. The investment in basic care tools — a paintbrush, microfibre cloths, and a display case — costs less than most single figures and protects everything you own.
